Your complete guide to getting around Luang Prabang - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang keeps things simple: tuk-tuks and songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) are the everyday workhorses, cheap and everywhere once you step outside the old town core. For a splurge, private cars or hotel-arranged vans give you air-con and door-to-door comfort. But expect to pay several times what the shared rides cost. Bicycles are the stealth winner inside the peninsula, flat, quiet lanes and plenty of rental shops make two wheels faster than four during peak hours. First-timers should know the old town itself is largely closed to vehicles after dusk. If your guesthouse is down one of the side alleys, you'll finish the last stretch on foot. When haggling for a tuk-tuk, agree the fare before you climb in, drivers rarely use meters and "around the corner" can be quoted like a day trip if you look freshly arrived. Skip the airport shuttle desks in the arrivals hall. The official taxi rank just outside is the only licensed option and usually cheaper than pre-booked rides. Quick airport tip: the taxi queue moves fast. But if you're travelling light and solo, wait until three or four passengers gather and ask the driver for a shared rate, it drops the cost to a fraction of a private ride without any extra stops beyond the town centre.

Quick Transportation Tips
